PowerTree Carbon Company

In 2003, Oglethorpe Power helped to form the PowerTree Carbon Company, LLC,  a consortium of 25 utilities that has worked to restore bottomland hardwood trees in the lower Mississippi River Valley. Six of seven replanting projects have been completed, with a final project set for completion in 2009.
The PowerTree projects have replanted more than one million trees on more than 3,500 acres of land in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. These trees are expected to sequester about 1.5 million tons of carbon over the 100-year life of the initiative.
In addition to capturing carbon dioxide (CO2), the PowerTree projects also help improve water quality and provide valuable habitat for native wildlife.
