Dixon Memorial State Forest
Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) is working with the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) to reforest up to 500 acres of land burned in wildfires near the Okefenokee Swamp in the summer of 2007. The replanting of wetland areas in the Dixon Memorial Forest will include red maple, cypress, swamp chestnut oak and water tupelo trees.
The Dixon Memorial Forest, located in Ware and Brantley counties, is the state’s fourth largest wildlife management area. The GFC has limited resources to replant the burned acreage on its own. OPC is providing monetary assistance to help implement a two-phased planting program that began late in 2008. The project will help restore the burned cypress sloughs much more quickly than if these acres were left to recover through natural regeneration.
Along with forming a valuable partnership with the GFC, OPC's contract with the state will allow OPC to take title to tons of carbon dioxide that will be sequestered as a result of the plantings.
