Oglethorpe Power takes very seriously its commitment to generate power for the Member Systems in a manner that is compatible with the surrounding environment.
As a proponent of conscientious energy development and use, Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) works hard to balance reliable and affordable energy with environmental responsibility, and has an outstanding record of regulatory compliance. The Corporation's policy and principles relative to the management of environmental matters is outlined in detail in its official Environmental Policy, first adopted by the Board of Directors in 2000 and updated in early 2011.
One of the biggest challenges facing the utility industry today is reconciling the responsibility to provide reliable and affordable electricity to customers with the need to work toward less carbon-intensive generating technologies as insurance against the impacts of future climate change. Oglethorpe Power is actively engaged in the issue through its research and development activities and through ongoing efforts to incorporate the likelihood of future climate change regulations into various planning processes. In recognition of the importance of the issue, Oglethorpe Power’s Board of Directors in 2007 adopted an official position statement on the climate change issue as a means of providing guidance for corporate activities in this area.
