Alternative Energy Sources

Oglethorpe Power also supports the continued investigation of such renewable sources as solar and wind, but, at present, these appear much less promising than biomass for development in Georgia. Except for the possibility of some offshore locations and a few high mountaintops, Georgia does not have the sustained winds necessary to support commercial electric power production from wind turbines.
Electricity from solar is more promising.  However, the amount of solar radiation available in Georgia is not comparable to such southwestern states as Arizona and California. And, the cost of solar generation using current technology is much higher than conventional sources.
