Even with the expansion of nuclear Plant Vogtle, Georgia will need additional generating facilities to meet the growing needs of its citizens. Some of these new plants are likely to be powered by natural gas, which is relatively abundant in the U.S. and generates power efficiently and with minimal impact on the environment.
Natural gas is well-suited as a fuel for combustion turbine and combined cycle plants, which often serve  as peaking or intermediate plants.  Combined cycle plants can potentially be used as base load plants as well.
In 2010, Oglethorpe Power announced that it will construct a 605-megawatt, natural gas-powered combined cycle plant that will become operational in 2015. The site for this $750 million facility has not yet been finalized.
