Nearly half of all Georgia residents get their electric service from Electric Membership Corporations, also known as EMCs. There are 42 EMCs providing service in all but a few of Georgia’s 159 counties. Thirty-eight of the state’s 42 EMCs own Oglethorpe Power Corporation.
EMCs are different from other electric utilities. They are not-for-profit electric cooperatives owned by the actual customers to whom they supply electricity. EMC customers are members as well as owners of their local EMCs.
